Welcome – Start Here!

This site was developed originally to provide resources for the 2019 W&M Teaching and Learning Symposium session entitled,

Shifting the Faculty Role in Learning: Decisions and Tools for Student Collaboration. Please click here to view our slides from the session.

Collaboration offers many benefits for students, but also comes with it’s share of concerns (please visit the link above to view both researched-based benefits and challenges as well as those ideas contributed by participants). It can be difficult, though, to think about where to start. Not all collaborative activities work in large classes. Some may work effectively in face-to-face courses, but not online. In some cases, collaborative activities require physically reconfiguring the layout of the classroom which is not possible in a room with mixed seating. We may not always have a substantial block of time to try out a new activity.

We’ve designed this site so that you can search for activities you can try out in your course that take into account some of these variables. You can explore the site in two ways:

  1. You can simply scroll through the collaborative learning activities and clicking on each to read more.
  2. You can review the activities more strategically, by selecting the tab of the variable you’re most interested in to filter possibilities based on your requirements. For example, if you only have a short time to devote to trying out a new experience, you might want to hover over the Timeframe tab and select 1 to 10 minutes.

If you have suggestions for additional learning activities to add, questions, or to share a story, please email us!
