Description: Word Webs are a collaborative approach to concept mapping. A central idea is added to a shared writing space. In small groups, students then generate a list of related ideas and organize them around the central idea in which they can visually represent how the ideas connect. This technique helps students to analyze challenging concepts and to explore how course topics connect. By graphically organizing the component parts and relationships between ideas, students are able to understand more complex concepts.
- Class size: 1-5, 15-30, 30-50, 50 or more
- Time frame: 1-10, 10-20, 20 more minutes (depending on complexity of concept)
- Setting: Flexible classroom
- Modality: Face-to-face, hybrid, online
Comments: Word Webs can be developed with analog means – paper/pencil, on butcher paper with markers, or on the classroom whiteboard. Students can also use digital tools like the Smart Art features in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. They can also use digital concept mapping tools like Mindmeister or Coggle. Word Webs can be used to help students build their knowledge or as a means of assessing their understanding.
