Description: In this activity, students work in teams to prepare for a class exam. They then take the exam individually. Then, before the exam is graded, students meet back in their teams to discuss their answers, and particularly any discrepancies. The team can either turn in one exam for the group or each student can turn in her own exam at the discretion of the instructor. By working together in this way, students deepen their understanding of the content. Barkley, et al, note, “Because each student first takes the test independently, the CoLT [collaborative learning technique] emphasizes individual accountability. By retaking the test as a team, individual students benefit from the collective knowledge of the group” (p. 219).
- Class size: 15-30, 30-50, 50 or more
- Time frame: 20 or more minutes
- Setting: Flexible classroom
- Modality: Face-to-face, hybrid
Comments: Students form group of 3-6, depending on the size of the class and group preference. The instructor can also form stratified groups as well, based on prior work in the course. Depending on the length and complexity of the exam, the review time can be as little as five minutes or as long as a full class session. Prior to distributing the exam, the instructor should be clear about the process and how the work will be graded. The instructor can choose to assign individual grades, team grades, or an average of each team member’s individual grades.
