Sequence Chains

Description: In this activity groups of students “analyze and depict graphically a sequence of events, actions, roles, or decisions. Sequence chains require students to create a visual map of the logic within a series” (Barkley, et al, 2014, p. 278). Students have to work together to identify the key events or points in the series and determine how to illustrate their connections in a graphical way. This can be a helpful activity to use both as a means for students to build their knowledge relative to a complex course topic and also serve as a means of assessing their understanding.

  • Class size: 1-15, 15-30, 30-50, 50 or more
  • Time frame: 10-20, 20 or more minutes
  • Setting: Flexible classroom
  • Modality: Face-to-face, hybrid, online

Comments: Sequence Chains can be developed with analog means – paper/pencil, on butcher paper with markers, or on the classroom whiteboard. Students can also use digital tools like the Smart Art features in Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. They can also use digital concept mapping tools like Mindmeister or Coggle. Whatever the format, it can be helpful to provide students with clear guidance on how they are to illustrate the logical connections between ideas.
